Added value

– from logging residues

When the project began in May 2021, we knew logging residues contained valuable green chemicals but lacked methods to separate needle-rich fractions or extract these compounds. By October 2022, we had achieved our goals: we developed a model to locate and quantify these chemicals in the Botnia Atlantica region, confirmed the feasibility of procuring fresh residues through alternative value chains, and demonstrated technologies to separate needle-rich fractions and extract high-value chemicals. Two companies validated the industrial potential of these extracts. An unexpected finding was that the remaining material, after needle separation, could be used as growing media.
