SCALE-UP, funded by Horizon, brought together actors from six European countries to identify and scale up sustainable bio-based value chains. BioFuel Region focused on by-products such as sawdust, bark, and logging residues. Twelve bio-innovations received support, and we supported a company developing fossil-free rubber from birch bark. Training sessions were conducted to streamline and ensure the quality of the logging residue value chain.
The project engaged over 1,300 participants from 32 countries through training, study visits, and knowledge exchange. A high school competition on bioeconomy was organized, and the winning contributions in northern Sweden highlighted how fungi can be used as building material, the advantages of bio-based filters, and biocomposites. In northern Sweden, the regional platform for bioeconomy, Bioeconomy North, has been strengthened and continues to develop the bioeconomy in the region.
