We work for a fossil-free northern Sweden, where sustainable development, regional strength, and global responsibility go hand in hand.
BioFuel Region is a member-owned, non-profit company that brings together municipalities and companies with high sustainability ambitions in northern Sweden.
We operate in the four northernmost counties and have been active since 2003. Through our unique role, we create the conditions to address shared challenges related to transition, climate, and regional development.
Our team consists of eight employees, and we are funded through memberships and project grants. Our organization is founded on collaboration and built on long-term relationships—locally, nationally, and internationally.
We run projects and build networks that accelerate the transition to a fossil-free society and a strengthened bioeconomy in northern Sweden.
By connecting the public sector, industry, and research, we turn ideas into action – and create tangible results: new business opportunities, shared knowledge, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.
We work in areas such as sustainable transport and the smart use of biomass. Everything we do is based on collaboration and the exchange of experiences. We ensure that new knowledge is put to use and influences action plans to pave the way for an inclusive transition.
Our vision is a fossil-free northern Sweden, where transition and development strengthen both the climate and the region.
Since our founding in 2003, we have worked to reduce dependence on fossil resources and to develop the bioeconomy.
Our efforts contribute to achieving several national and global sustainability goals—but for us, these are not the final destination; they are confirmation that we are on the right path.
